Make a Coffee Cup Sleeve in 6 Simple Steps

Step by Step Instructions

I've been seeing these coffee cup sleeves all over Pinterest and thought I would give one a shot. Most I've seen are made from purchased fabric, but I decided to do a little upcycling and use an old sweater. Here are the steps to make your own coffee cup sleeve:

FOR THIS PROJECT YOU WILL NEED:

Old sweater or fabric

Lace trim

Buttons

Hot glue gun

Scissors

Cup (for measuring)

STEP 1: CUT FABRIC

To begin, I cut a portion of the sleeve of the sweater I choose. I used a Starbucks cup to determine how much to cut.

STEP 2: CUT EXTRA FABRIC

Next, you'll want to cut off a portion of the top half of the fabric, so the top of the sleeve mirrors the bottom. This will allow the fabric to line up for the following step.

STEP 3: FOLD FABRIC

Turn the sleeve inside out, then fold the top half down over the bottom half, like shown below. Sew or use your glue gun (as I did) to glue the two pieces together at the bottom opening.

STEP 4: CUT SLEEVE OPEN

Next, cut directly on the seam of the sleeve to open it up. You'll do this so you will then be able to create a bit of overlap in the next step.

STEP 5: ATTACH LACE

Take the lace trim and cut a piece the same length as one of the sides you just cut. Use your glue gun to attach the lace (or sew) to one side of the opening.

STEP 6: CLOSE & ATTACH BUTTONS

Fold one flap over the other, creating just a bit of overlap. Glue or sew to secure. Finally, attach your buttons wherever you wish.

This was definitely a different project for me, and not something I would normally make...but super cute, right? I love that there are endless variations! I'd love to hear your thoughts on how these projects go for you!
