Fashion Transformation: Open Back Top with Studded Trim
Step by Step Instructions
One of my favorite fashion related things to do (besides shopping of course) is to take an old article of clothing and transform it into something new. I do this all the time for the costumes my girls wear for the character sessions. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create this custom cutout for the back of a shirt.
Here are the steps to transform your top:
FOR THIS PROJECT YOU WILL NEED:
A shirt (with a plain back)
Fabric glue
Scissors
Fabric pins
Fabric trim
STEP 1: CUT FABRIC
I started by cutting a V out of the back of the shirt. If you are uncomfortable free-handing this part, you can make a template first. I just used a fabric pen to draw directly on the fabric.
STEP 2: GLUE HEM
Next, fold the newly cut edge under a half an inch and use the fabric glue to secure in place. I would also recommend using sewing pins to hold the fabric until it dries. Let dry completely before moving on to the next step.
You can of course sew this step if you prefer.
STEP 3: CUT & GLUE TRIM
Lay out your fabric trim however you desire and cut to size. I wanted four strips, so I made sure to space them out evenly and cut them one inch longer than each area's opening. This will give an extra half inch on each side to glue the trim to the hem.
Finally, glue the trim in place. Again, you may want to use your pins to hold the trim until it is complete dry.
And that's it! This transformation took roughly 30 minutes (not including drying time), and of course the process could be sped up if you know how to sew! What do you think of this new look?
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the project goes for you! Don't forget to follow Urban Rhino on social media and subscribe to our website for more upcoming fashion transformations and tutorials!
I love this one because it doesn’t involve sewing 🙏🏼
