How to Make a Reversible Fleece Blanket
A Step-by-Step Tutorial
My girls really love to snuggle up with an extra soft blanket, as I'm sure anyone would. Since they were maxed out on blankets, I decided to take this project on with my nephew in mind. He's a HUGE Star Wars fan, and his room is decorated in that theme, so why not make him a blanket to match? Here are the supplies and steps to make your own fleece blanket:
FOR THIS PROJECT YOU WILL NEED:
2 yards of character or patterned fleece
2 yards of solid coordinating fleece
Sewing machine
Fabric pins
Fabric scissors
STEP 1: TRIM UNWANTED FABRIC
When I purchased the fleece, the character portion had a section of white print along the edge that I didn't want to show, so I trimmed that off. This also made the widths even by doing so.
STEP 2: PIN FABRIC EDGE
There are a million ways you could piece these two sections of fabric together...sewing the pieces face to face then turning them back out, making slits and creating a "Tie Blanket", or adding blanket binding along the edge. I've tried all of these techniques, so I wanted to attempt a different method.
For this method, I folded over the edge of one side of the fleece, so one inch of the solid fabric was showing on top of the character fleece, as shown in the photo below. I used fabric pins to hold the fold in place. Fleece doesn't fray like a lot of other fabric, so it generally has a pretty clean edge.
STEP 3: SEW FOLDED EDGE
The next step was to sew 1/4" in from the folded edge, as show below.
STEP 4: REPEAT STEPS 2 & 3
Once you sew one side of the blanket, repeat steps 2 and 3 on the opposite edge.
STEP 5: FOLD TOP & BOTTOM EDGES
The next step is to fold over the top and bottom edges, as you previously did in step 2 for the sides. Be sure to take care around the corners, so no unwanted fabric is showing.
STEP 6: SEW FOLDED EDGES
Finally, sew the top and bottom folds to complete the blanket. Make sure to trim any loose thread.
This is another project that can be completed in under an hour, depending on your sewing skill level. Planning on making a fleece blanket for yourself or your kiddo? I'd love to hear how these projects go for you!
