How to Make Yarn Heart Garland in 4 Easy Steps

A Simple DIY For Valentine's Day or Any Occasion

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, some people like to skip the winter decor all together and go straight to the hearts! I found this post on Pinterest and fell in love with the knit mini heart garland. So I decided to do my own version with no knitting or crocheting talents required! Here are the simple steps to make your own heart garland:

FOR THIS PROJECT YOU WILL NEED:

Colored Yarn

Cardboard

Sharpie Marker

Scissors

Twine

STEP 1: TRACE & CUT HEARTS

I found this template online to use as my template for my hearts.  I printed it out to the size I wanted, then cut it out.  Then I traced the heart onto my mat board (cardboard works fine too), and cut it out. I've found that tracing a cardboard template is easier than tracing a thin piece of paper.

From here, I traced the cardboard template 9 more times onto my board...for a total of 10 hearts. Cut out each of the hearts.

STEP 2: WRAP HEARTS IN YARN

The hearts were really simple to make. Choose your yarn colors based on the theme you want. For example, I went with a variety of pinks for this one since it is for Valentine's Day. However, you could do neutrals if you want to hang up this garland year-round.

Take your yarn and hold it down on the back of one of your cut out hearts. You can add a piece of tape for added support if you want to, but there is really no need for it. After a few wraps around the heart, the starting piece will be secured down. Keep wrapping the yarn around the heart trying to go from different directions each time. Your main goal will be to completely cover all of the cardboard showing through the yarn. Keep the yarn pulled tight as you wrap it around the heart.

When you have the heart completely covered with yarn, you will have to create a loop for the heart to hang from and tie off the end. Cut the yarn leaving a tail long enough to form a loop, about 6 inches. Tie the two strands of yarn in a knot.

Repeat this step for the remaining hearts.

STEP 3: CREATE BEADED GARLAND

Next, cut a piece of twine 6-8' long, depending on your preference and where you intend on hanging the finished garland. Tie a knot at the end of the twine, and string on wooden beads using whatever sizes you prefer. I planned ahead and put on a larger bead, then six medium beads, followed by another larger bead. This allowed me to attach the hearts in between the six medium beads. Tie a knot at the other end to hold the beads on.

STEP 4: ATTACH HEARTS

Finally, I attached the hearts to the garland by tying the yarn in between the sections of six medium beads. Just tie the strands of yarn to the garland in the correct place.

While it is a little time consuming to make the hearts, overall this looks pretty simple, right? This would also be really cute in a baby or little girl’s room! I'd love to hear your thoughts on how these projects go for you!
